Conversation Pieces is a portable exhibit experience and discussion space rooted in my personal family archive as well as a lifetime of collecting.

Origin story

When I posted a picture of my grandmother kissing another woman, I unexpectedly opened a very large public conversation that reached millions of people. The image became more than a piece of my private family history; it became an opening for how to tell my own story, too.

Alongside support from Zioness, my vision for Conversation Pieces began to take shape: a documentary and photographic approach to different aspects of my identity, including Jewish, Indigenous Okinawan, LGBTQ, and more, used as a prompt for deeper public conversation.

For hosts

Conversation Pieces is designed to set up quickly, and adapt from small rooms to large venues. It can be installed free-standing on C-stands or mounted directly to walls with adhesive mounts, depending on the space.
